I warmed to this gallery. First impression was that it was relatively small, but it was packed with a fascinating insight into Bill Reid and First Nation heritage.
The gift shop is also excellent and very reasonably priced (in contrast to many others), with a great selection of local art and craft.
With the Museum of Anthropology closed at the moment, this is a very worthwhile alternative.
Welcome to the West Coast!
It is hard to express the significance Bill Reid has had on West Coast culture. After working with the CBC he discovered his talent for Haida and other forms of art. This museum is not only a tribute to him but his indigenous peers and modernists.
This is a must for locals as well as tourists who are interested in art and culture that is truly West Coast and profoundly tied to the land.
The art gallery is very nice! You get to know Bill Reid various artworks and the fact that the museum is not too big, you have time in one visit to read and understand about historical facts and all the intricate details of every art and its contexts.
Highly recommended!
A very unique and interesting, yet informative experience about the culture and impact on Bill Reids work and life. Worth a visit and just have a read inside
Been here before 5 or 6 years ago. Display has changed but is still very interesting. Bill Reid is a very interesting person and still has an influence on the art world.
Highly informative and visually stunning museum. The two exhibitions that are on display until mid-March tell a story about the immense efforts of yesteryear that have made it possible for the Indigenous art of today, as the upstairs exhibit focuses on language preservation through recording languages on records, and the downstairs focuses on contemporary Indigenous art.
For the Bill Reid works, absolutely take the time to work through the smaller pieces that are on display - though all of his pieces are equally worth your time!
Even though they say they are not quite finished setting up the exhibits there is a lot to see. This was our first visit but I have a feeling we may well return. Reid was an amazing talent. I was amazed by one of his earliest works: a miniature tea set made from a stick of chalk and nail varnish. When I go to stay with people in other places I buy a Bill Reid framed image as a hostess gift. I also have some at home now. I wish I had been given one of the $20 bills when they came out but I suspect they all went to collectors. There are also works by other FN artists and of course visiting exhibitions. When you are in Vancouver this has to be on your list of places to visit. The staff are charming.
Beautiful, tastefully designed gallery. Take time to enjoy the art and the mythology it reflects. The sculptures in stone and wood stand out. And the gold jewelry is spectacular and a surprise, as I didn't know about these pieces. Well worth the $13 for an adult ticket. A nice gift shop concludes your visit.
